In reading Nadja it didn't occur to me that she was "unique" until she pulled Andrea's hat off his head and looked inside. Joe explained to me that men would use "unique" women as muses for their art and that these women would suffer further trauma from this observations. He redeemed himself slightly when, at the end of the book, he said something along the line that the asylum makes people crazy and that patients fighting against their internment was proof of their craziness. That's similar to runaway slaves being labeled as crazy for running away. As a society was may have come further in the study of the mind, but now the problem is having access to the help. So don't go crazy.
